NEW YORK, August. 04 - Kid Fitness, Inc., the creators of the “Kid
Fitness Show” seen nationally on PBS stations, is delighted to announce that
Dr. Mary Tanner and Dr. Gregory Heath, both of the University of Tennessee
at Chattanooga, have joined the Kid Fitness National Advisory Board.
Dr. Tanner is Dean of the College of Education and Applied Professional
Studies. Dr. Tanner is active in many community and professional groups and
is nationally recognized for her expertise in education. Her professional
activities center on programs and projects that improve the quality of
education to better serve and support children and families.
The Kid Fitness For Schools Program is successfully being used by almost
250,000 children in New York City Public schools.
Dr. Heath was formally the Lead Health Scientist with the Division of
Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta and is also involved in a variety of community
and statewide efforts to improve health through awareness, education and
movement. Dr. Heath along with this distinguished list of colleagues has
made tremendous impact on children’s health.
Drs. Tanner and Heath will provide guidance and input into the design of
the new Kid Fitness, "Fun Fitness Breaks for Schools" program. This is the
second year in elementary schools for the exercise program. This year the
kits will be expanded to include added references to the learning standards.
In addition each age appropriate kit will contain a sample of a book that
will connect to the activity or animal and is a quality children’s book that
is recommended for that age group to increase literacy and language. The
redesigned kits are age appropriate and include pre-school children as young
as 2 years old through grade 5.
A comprehensive data management and evaluation system with published
outcomes will be designed to show the impact of the program and its ability
to positively change children’s health. Dr. Gregory Heath and colleagues at
UTC will lead this effort.
The Kid Fitness goal is to help combat childhood obesity through
awareness, education, nutrition and movement. The United Way of Greater
Chattanooga is partnering with Kid Fitness to pilot the “Fun Fitness Break
Classroom Kits” in school classrooms, after school programs and child care
centers within the community. The kits will be provided free of charge to
these programs by sponsorships and grants.
