Dr. Stephen Virgilio

Dr. Stephen Virgilio is a professor and chairman of the Department of Health Studies, Physical Education, and Human Performance Science at Adelphi University, Garden City, New York. He has researched and studied childhood obesity and school-based interventions for more than 25 years. Dr. Virgilio has published extensively. He has conducted over 150 presentations, and workshops including several keynote addresses. He is the author of three books including his most recent, Active Start for Healthy Kids (2006). He has been a consultant to such companies as Fisher Price, Sport-Fun, and Dannon Yogurt as well as many school districts, throughout the country. Dr. Virgilio has been widely quoted on the issues relative to childhood obesity and physical activity for children in newspapers such as, The NY Times , Chicago Tribune, LA Times, USA Today, as well as several magazines such as Child, Parenting, and Nickelodeon Jr. to name a few. Currently, he is serving on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Sport & Physical Education (NASPE), and the editorial board of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, & Dance.

Dr. Andrea Vazzana

Psychologist, Andrea Vazzana, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine's Child Study Center, where she specializes in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders and conducts pre- and post-surgical evaluations of adolescents undergoing Lap-Band surgery for obesity. She is the Clinical Director of the Harris Obesity Prevention Effort which includes an obesity prevention and health promotion program for preschoolers and their families. Dr. Vazzana has discussed weight and eating related issues in Cookie and Seventeen magazines, and has appeared on several radio and television programs, including those on Martha Stewart Living radio and CNN Headline News, among others. She earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Loyola College and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Northern Illinois University. Training in eating disorders was conducted at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Charlene R. Burgeson

Charlene R. Burgeson is Executive Director of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). From 1997-2003, Burgeson was employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where she served as a health scientist in the Division of Adolescent and School Health and a public health advisor in the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. As a physical education and activity specialist, she provided guidance regarding physical activity surveillance, programs, and training; and developed tools to assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs in schools and communities. In 2000 she co-authored a report from the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Education to the President of the United States entitled, Promoting Better Health for Young People through Physical Activity and Sport. She was also the lead author for the physical education chapter of the 2000 School Health Policies and Programs Survey (SHPPS) published by CDC. A former elementary physical education teacher, Burgeson also coached local youth sports. She received her master of arts in physical education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Bachelor of Science in health and physical education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.

Susan Amerikaner

Susan is an award-winning screenwriter, author and educational consultant, specializing in work for children and parents. She created the Gifted and Talented Series, groundbreaking books which were the first to focus on critical and creative thinking skills for young children. Her credits include more than 50 books for adults and children. As Manager of Disney Schoolhouse, Susan developed multimedia materials for classroom and home use and instituted the Disney Schoolhouse Teacher Workshops, a national network of seminars for elementary school teachers. Susan was one of the chief writers for the acclaimed Madeline cartoon series, based on the classic children's books. Susan was also Shelley Duvall's Story Editor on Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, starring Jean Stapleton. Susan has developed concepts and scripts for numerous PBS shows, including The Book of Virtues and Puzzle Place. Susan's extensive writing credits include Playhouse Disney and SPROUT, the first 24-hour preschool cable network. Susan has a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Maryland and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from George Washington University.
